Get paid to spend an afternoon with someone genuinely interesting.
We match New York university students with older New Yorkers for a standing weekly visit. Conversation, museums, a walk, the crossword, an argument about a book. It is not medical work and it is not babysitting — it's company, and you'll be good at it or you won't get hired.
What the work is
You are there for the company. That's the entire job.
Most of our clients are sharp, independent people whose weeks got quiet. You show up on the same day each week, you're interested in them, and you go do something. Below is the honest boundary of what that means.
What you'd do
A typical afternoon.
- Talk, listen, read aloud, play cards, argue about the news
- Go somewhere — a museum, a park, a lecture, the farmers market
- Accompany them to appointments and wait with them
- Shop and run errands together, alongside them
- Sort out the iPad, the photos, the video calls
- Write a short note to the family afterward — five minutes, paid
What you'd never do
No exceptions, even if you're asked.
- Bathing, dressing, toileting or any personal care
- Touch medication at all
- Transfer or physically support someone
- Anything clinical — wounds, vitals, glucose, injections
- Cook, or run errands while they stay home
- Handle their cash, cards, keys or accounts
Why it's worth your Tuesday
The pay is good. It's the least interesting reason to do this.
It's real patient contact, sort of
If you're pre-med, nursing or public health, this is time spent listening to an older adult tell you how their life actually works. Every clinician we know says that skill is learned late and slowly. You'd be learning it as a sophomore.
A reference who knows you
Six months of standing visits gives us something specific to write about you — how you handle a hard afternoon, what you did when plans fell through. That beats a shift-work reference in any application cycle.
It fits around class
One afternoon a week, in a slot you choose and keep. No nights, no closing shifts, no scrambling for hours. We plan around exams and breaks six weeks ahead.
Hiring process
Roughly two weeks, and we'll tell you where you stand at each step.
Apply
The form below. Ten minutes. Nothing is run on you at this stage.
Short call
Fifteen minutes to cover schedule, neighborhood and what you're looking for.
In-person interview
Thirty minutes, face to face, somewhere in the city. This is the part that decides it.
Offer and screening
A conditional offer first, then background screening and enrollment verification with their own consent forms.
Shadow visit
You sit in on a visit with a coordinator before you ever work alone. Paid.
Questions
Things students ask.
No. Credentials are a nice extra and we'll note them, but they're not required and they don't change what you're allowed to do — this is a non-medical role for everyone. We hire on judgment, warmth and reliability.
Tell us early and we plan around it. We map winter and summer breaks about six weeks ahead so the client is never surprised. What we can't do is absorb a cancellation the night before — the whole product is that the same person shows up on the same day, and someone is expecting you.
W-2. You're an employee, taxes are withheld properly, and you're covered by workers' compensation while you're working. We don't use the contractor model that most app-based care platforms run on.
It happens after a conditional offer, never at the application stage, and it comes with its own separate consent and disclosure forms that you'll read and sign. It covers criminal records, the national sex offender registry and identity verification, and we confirm your enrollment with your university.
Say so and we re-match you. Nobody is served by a scholar dreading their Tuesday. Both sides meet before anything is scheduled precisely so that mismatches surface early.
The visit note after each visit is paid time. Ask about travel on the call — we'd rather set expectations honestly up front than have it be a surprise on your first paycheck.
Apply to become a scholar
Ten minutes. We read every application. Placement means holding the same slot each week for a full term — the consistency is the whole point, so please only apply if you can commit to it.
